What are Smart Devices? – Pros and Cons

Smart devices are here to stay. There are ample awesome benefits for having these gadgets in our lives. And, there can be grievous costs too.

What is a Smart Device?

A smart device is an electronic gadget, an everyday object made intelligent to generally connect to other devices, or networks. And, to be able to share, and interact through different wireless protocols that can operate to some extent interactively and independently with its users, and other smart devices. Here is a video on IoT.

I have Mixed Feelings about Smart Devices and the Rapid Digital and Technological Advancement made Globally.

On one hand, Artificial intelligence (AI) has contributed in a major way to making our world more accessible, smoother and smarter too. Artificial intelligence and smart devices also reduce our demand our electricity grids. This means, our smart device(s) seem to make our lives simpler and less stressful on certain levels. But, like I eluded to earlier, I have some reservations. There are other ways smart devices have been beneficial to us. Here are some other ways smart devices have simplified our lives in rather the interesting ways:

Smart Devices
  • We now have wearables such as smart phones and tablets, earbuds and smart watches to capture Health and Financial data
  • Home appliances such as security, lights, baby monitors, doorbells, stereos, refrigerators and televisions have been handy to mention a few
  • Robots such as social and companion robots such as Alexa and Siri, robot window cleaners and educational robots to also mention some examples have made life easier.
  • Work devices such as energy management, smart meeting room solution, security, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, as well as smart parking solutions seem to have cut costs amidst other benefits.
  • Being able to successfully work online from anywhere in almost any type of business. This benefit right here is amazing, fantastic, fabulous and awesome. This benefit is a huge plus for me. Especially because I am looking forward to having multiple streams of income to build Generational and Intergenerational Wealth.
  • Almost every higher-level job requires good IT and automation proficiency to thrive. Therefore, jobs are created because people have to be employed to operate and maintain these devices.
  • In general smart devices can be huge time savers!

Now! What is my bias towards what I call the over-digitalization of our lives…

On the other hand, there are some serious drawbacks from the rapid advancement we are making with our smart devices.

  • The fact that we have access to smart social and companion robots, smart phones, we appear to be losing the capacity to tolerate natural human interactions.
  • This loss of human interactions breeds social withdrawal and isolation. When we are isolated for long enough, depression and other mental health challenges set in.
  • Many children in this era have lost the writing skills that older folks have. I remember as a child from elementary to high school I had to hand write everything, which solidified my handwriting. Due to the advent of smart devices, almost all homework is done on computers and the like. The last time I inquired, there is no hand writing class in elementary school anymore, at least the city I live in the USA.
  • The automation of various aspects of our lives through the evolving invention of smart devices reduces the number of bodies needed to perform a particular set of tasks. This trend over time will most likely increase the number of people who become, and stay unemployed.
  • The avalanche of smart devices around us these days also expose us to cybercrimes, and cyberattack risks, including Identity Theft which takes hundreds of hours to clean up, which in turn can be emotionally and psychologically draining.
What are Smart Devices

My Conclusion

Yes, it is a fact that these smart devices stimulate people. However, I see this stimulation as artificial, which takes us, especially our young ones away from aligning with nature. Being glued to any smart screen for hours, or having everything done automatically takes away from our Mobility and Functionality. You see, I am an advocate for the return to what is natural across the spectrum of our endeavors. I believe we have so many anomalies in almost every area of life because we are misaligned within ourselves, and with our various environments, including relationships.

In my mind, the number one mismatch is our separation, or dissociation from nature. How can we claim to be human, without being natural? If we claim we are natural beings, but yet, we act like we are not part of nature, how can we feel well? Nature has both life and vital force, and we seem to be in constant flux with nature. Therefore, it is not surprising to me there is mayhem, chaos, inconsideration, and maladies of all sorts everywhere. Nature is meant to revitalize, rejuvenate and reenergize us. But, when we fail to interact with nature naturally, but rather act against it by being grossly unnatural, what do we think will be consequences?
